My Gums Are Bleeding, Is That Bad?
At Seven Star Dental, we are concerned about the state of your oral health. We want our patients to feel empowered to know and understand when something doesn’t feel right with their oral health. We know that it can be concerning when you experience a problem with your oral health. One common issue that patients experience is bleeding gums. We all experience bleeding gums from time to time. It is especially common if a large piece of food becomes trapped between the teeth, irritating the gums. If it occurs regularly, your bleeding gums can be an indication that there is something wrong with your oral health. Some possible causes of bleeding gums include:
Poor Oral Hygiene
One of the most common reasons for bleeding gums is poor oral hygiene. As mentioned above, gums can bleed when food is trapped between the teeth, but it can also occur if you are not cleaning and caring for your teeth properly. If you brush and floss roughly, you are causing trauma to your gums. Be sure to use gentle motions when brushing, and do not force the floss into your gums. If you are unsure how to brush and floss, we would love to help during your next visit.
Gum Disease
This is a common disease that affects a large percentage of adults. This condition occurs when there is plaque and tartar buildup along the gum line. There are not many warning signs to alert you to this condition, and bleeding gums is one of the few that can indicate a problem.
Medications
You would be surprised by the number of medications that can affect your gums. Any medications that can cause bleeding issues may cause your gums to bleed more than usual. This is why it is extremely important to notify our team of any changes to your medical history.
If you experience bleeding gums it is important not to worry, but it is important to visit us soon. If you are located in Cincinnati, OH or the surrounding area, we recommend calling our office to schedule an appointment. We can perform an examination to determine the exact cause and recommend a treatment plan. We look forward to helping get your oral health back on track.
