Cincinnati’s rich history has led to an amusing and colorful past. In the mid-19th century, the town had the nickname “Porkopolis” due to the huge meat packing industry that was one of the largest in the country. You can still see statues of pigs throughout downtown. While you may not see pigs fly in Cincinnati, it does attract over 500,000 people each year to its public festivals and sporting events.
The city combines amazing architecture and historical buildings with more modern architecture. Being the third largest city in Ohio, it seemed to attract a significant number of German-speaking immigrants in the late 1800s. This is probably why it is also known for its famous German dishes, especially goetta, a popular meat and grain sausage.
Some famous celebrities are associated with Cincinnati. In addition to being the birthplace of William Howard Taft, the 27th President of the United States, Cincinnati was also home to the more controversial Jerry Springer, who was the mayor at one time. Host to three professional sports teams, the city has its share of activities to attend each year.
