Are You Suffering From TMD?
Do you regularly experience discomfort in your jaw? Do you wake up every day with a lingering headache that won’t go away? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you may be suffering from a common condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder, also referred to as TMD. This common issue can arise due to problems in the facial muscles and jaw joints. You may also be familiar with the term, TMJ, which stands for the temporomandibular joint. This joint is the hinge that attaches your jaw to your skull, and if it becomes misaligned, it can lead to discomfort and leave lasting effects.
TMD Symptoms
Unfortunately, many patients suffer from TMD but remain undiagnosed because their symptoms resemble those of other conditions. Sometimes, patients are misdiagnosed because they visit other specialists for certain symptoms that can also indicate other conditions and are frustrated when the symptoms and problems persist. For example, headaches and facial discomfort are common symptoms of TMD, but patients and doctors may believe they have allergies or a sinus infection. Symptoms of TMD can include:
- Jaw that gets stuck and is difficult to open and close
- Clicking or popping sound when opening your mouth or eating
- Discomfort in the jaw area or aching facial pain
- Difficulty chewing and swallowing
- Headaches
- Ear pain and ringing in the ears
Ways to Relieve Your Symptoms
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, or you feel any discomfort in your mouth, be sure to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. In the meantime, we recommend eating softer foods and taking smaller bites when eating. You can also massage your jaw and use a warm compress as needed. Stress can aggravate your symptoms, so remember to stay relaxed.
If TMD is not treated, symptoms could multiply and become more severe over time. If you live in Cincinnati, OH or the surrounding area and are experiencing any of these symptoms or are interested in learning more about TMD, please contact our office today. We look forward to seeing you soon.
